Great guide to "alternative" Amsterdam
If you're interested in the smoking side of visiting Amsterdam, this is the best book I have seen. While this is certainly not the only guide you should read before your trip, it is a damn good one. It's advice on the best coffee shops was mostly right on the mark, and the best deals and highest quality were had at his recommended shops. In summary... if you're a toker, pick up this joker! :-)

Amterdam: I used all the books and Get Lost! was the best.
I just got back last month from a fantastic trip to Amsterdam. Joe Pauker's book, "The Cool Guide to Amsterdam", was the key to my trip. Before I left, my family and friends gave me several guides to the city. I took them all with me, but I ended up using only Get Lost! Not only was the information the most interesting and up to date, but I found it hillarious reading as well. I've travelled all around the world, used the various other "alternative" guidebooks and I have never found a book that covered so many cool and funky places in a city. Admitedly, Amsterdam is a city filled with beautiful architecture, great music, excellent coffee shops and unique squat restaurants, but Pauker's "Cool Guide to Amsterdam" showed me where they all were.

I'm a convert - a great book to take on your trip!
I wrote a previous review after I received Get Lost! Amsterdam but before I made my trip. At the time, I liked the book but felt it was overpriced. I just returned from 10 days in Amsterdam, and I'd like to change my review. This book was great!! Assuming, of course, that you're going to Amsterdam for Smart Shops, and a great scene. If you're not interested in drugs or the cheapest places to stay, this book isn't for you. The information was very useful; I repeatedly referred to the lodging, drug and general info sections. My only criticism is there could be more listings for restaurants - but then, this probably isn't the only guide you're going to bring with you. A very useful guide for anyone looking for a great trip . . .

Joe Pauker is back! This 10th edition of his Cool Guide sizzles with new and exciting things to do in Amsterdam. Opinionated, but never irreverent, Get Lost! remains the only guide to cover Amsterdam's underground culture accurately and extensively, leading travellers to the cheapest, funkiest and most delicious spots in town: inexpensive organic restaurants, the coolest bars and clubs, an incredible array of alternative museums, mind-expanding cafes, one-of-a-kind shops, and, of course, the kinkiest corners of the Red Light District. Readers trust The Cool Guide for practical information, and for the lowdown on more obscure topics such as local pirate radio, and the squat scene. As always, it's printed on eco-friendly recycled paper with vegetable-based inks. With Joe Pauker's legendary guide, every traveler has a cool friend in Amsterdam. Top to learn more
Off-the-wall humor and opinions aside, you get the feeling that Pauker really knows Amsterdam and wouldn't give you bum advice. Hotels and hostels (including the comfortable couches at Schiphol Airport), restaurants, attractions, and shopping are all covered in some detail, and obvious care was taken in selecting those establishments hip enough (and cheap enough) to make it into the book. If you're the kind of traveler who might need the Dutch translation of "stoned as a shrimp," or if you simply appreciate a fresh perspective and directions away from the trampled path, let Pauker be your guide to the "coolest, most happening city in Europe." Appropriate for All Ages
The beauty of this book is that its content and style is just as appealing to a 12 year old as it is a grandparent. As an adult I was spellbound by the sheer number of facts and details the author puts forth about early New Amsterdam life and politics, spoken through era-appropriate dialogue and characters who really lived their stories! As an educational administrator not only do I recommend Manhattan: Seeds of the Big Apple for school libraries, but as an excellent addition to any social studies curriculum. A truly unique book which should become a classic resource about the life and times of New York's early Dutch settlers.

Historical adventure with a touch of romance
If you enjoy early colonial history and are looking for a wholesome read, this book is for you. A novel with a real flavor of what it must have been like living back in 17th century Manhattan. I'm looking forward to other books by this author.

A Tale of New York in its Infancy
This saga includes some intriguing geographic references to familiar locales in and around present day New York. The author imagines the challenges that a pioneering family might well have faced in early Colonial times. In depth character development and clever, but natural, use of Colonial colloquialism bring this tale to life. All in all, a novel that really uplifts the spirit.

Book Review: MANHATTAN SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE -I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your book, "Manhattan Seeds of the Big Apple" www.book. My 9th Great Grandfather was Abraham Pietersen Van Deusen b.Nov. 6, 1602, who came to New Amsterdam and was a Miller for the Dutch West India Co. He was involved in several businesses including Cattle and in l648 he was one of l2 tavern keepers in New Amsterdam. In l655 after a suprise attack by Indians Abraham Pietersen Van Deusen subscribed voluntarily 6 guilders for strengthening wall (Wall St.) I have pretty much the whole history of this family. A very interesting branch of my family tree. Thank you for bringing those days of my 9th great-grandfather to life so I could see and feel how he lived back in those times.-Frank Bennett-New YorkAuthor's note: Waldron and Pieterson Van Deusen were indeed neighbors. Waldron on Block B and Abraham Pietersen Van Deusen living on Block C in New Amsterdam.More information at www.gloriawaldronhukle.nameClick this link to read a review of Manhattan: Seeds of the Big Apple. In 1653, lower Manhattan was a Dutch community of about 120 houses, its people protected by a fort and a log wall which stood as a defense against Indian attacks. Today’s Wall Street follows the line of that ancient plank wall. Sheriff Resolved Waldron, his wife, Tennake, and their three children lived at the present day crossing of Wall Street and Broadway. There along with them on Block B, across the street from the Dutch West India Company’s enormous garden, resided Augustine Herrman, Peter Schaefbanck, the jailor, Hendrick Hendricksen, and Domine (clergy) Samuel Drisius. These were but a few of America's first immigrants. This is their story.More information go to www.gloriawaldronhukle.name Top to learn more
